At the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, Nigerian-British filmmaker Akinola Davies Jr. made history with his debut feature, My Father’s Shadow, earning a Special Mention for the prestigious Caméra d’Or award. This recognition highlights the film’s exceptional storytelling and marks a significant milestone for Nigerian cinema on the global stage.

My Father’s Shadow is a semi-autobiographical drama set in 1993 Nigeria, during a period of political unrest. The narrative follows two young brothers who embark on a journey with their estranged father, Folarin, portrayed by Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù. As they traverse from their village to Lagos, the film delves into themes of fatherhood, identity, and the complexities of familial relationships against the backdrop of national turmoil.

Co-written with his brother Wale Davies, Akinola Davies Jr. drew inspiration from their personal experiences, particularly the loss of their father at a young age.
